Pharmacy students give back
VCU School of Pharmacy students were busy at the polls on Election Day 2008 -- not only encouraging people to vote but also helping to make sure as many people as possible were immunized against influenza. According to Project Immunize Virginia, about half of the voters at local polling locations were age 50 or older, one of the target populations for flu shots. The Vote and Vaccinate project offered immunization for all voters and their family members, however, at the Lakewood Manor and The Hermitage polling locations in Richmond.
The Student Association of Community Pharmacists' second "Living With Diabetes" program featured diabetic-friendly foods, blood pressure and blood glucose readings, flu shots and information booths for seniors.

Among those helping out were third-year Pharm.D. students Jon Carter, president of the Virginia Academy of Student Pharmacists, and Holly Gurgle, secretary of the Student Chapter of the Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
That same week, nearly 20 School of Pharmacy students participated in the Student Association of Community Pharmacists’ “Living With Diabetes” program. The event at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church focused on how patients can manage their disease with lifestyle, food choices and regular monitoring.
Amy Whitaker (Pharm.D. ’98), assistant professor of pharmacy, was instrumental in securing Kmart as a sponsor for the event.

Alumnus directs interns on YouTube
Tom Dorsey (B.S.’75/B), who is co-owner of Richmond-based investment firm Dorsey Wright and Associates, assigned his student interns to reach out to fellow college students in a series of low-budget Web videos. The goal: to get them thinking about how to manage their money.
The first video shows Snead Hall, the new home of the VCU School of Business, in the background and features VCU finance major Joe Grim.
