2010 AAAC Reunion Weekend
Virginia Commonwealth University’s African-American Alumni Council cordially invites you to join us as we affirm our connections to one another and to our university at Reunion Weekend 2010. Events throughout the weekend, on- and off-campus, will give you a chance to catch up with what is happening with all of your friends as well as what is going on at VCU.

Co-hosts: Eta Tau chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. and the Delta Upsilon chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. celebrating their 40th anniversary on campus.

Hilton Richmond Hotel and Spa/Short Pump Town Center, 12042 W. Broad St. A block of rooms is available alumni at a special rate of $99 per night. For reservations, call (804) 364-3600 and ask the "VCU Alumni" room block. Hotel reservations must be made by March 30, 2010.
This year we are celebrating the 40th anniversaries of the Eta Tau chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. and the Delta Upsilon chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. We also welcome current and former VCU African-American faculty members through the Black Education Association of VCU.

Please complete the online registration form by Thursday, April 22. Those who wish to pay by check can print the registration form and stop by VCU Alumni Office at 924 W. Franklin St.
Hotel guests can pick up registration materials and tickets at check-in. Others reunion attendees can pick up their registration materials and tickets at the VCU Alumni House between noon–4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. We will also make every attempt to deliver materials at your first scheduled event if you are unable to stop by the VCU Alumni House.
AAAC Reunion Weekend 2010 Schedule of Events
Friday, April 23, 2010
9 a.m. – AAAC Golf Outing - The AAAC invite alumni to participate in its 2010 golf outing at the Sycamore Creek Golf Course in Manakin-Sabot, Va. The outing includes range balls, carts, box lunches, golf prizes. Tee time is 9 a.m. Sycamore Creek Golf Course, 991 Manakin Road, Manakin-Sabot, Va. (just off West Broad St.)
Cost: $45 per player
** Registration for this event will be handled online only and space is limited. Registrations must be received by Monday, April 19. To properly coordinate foursomes, we will not be able to accommodate same-day/on-site registrations.
11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. - Community Service Project - As part of our community service for Reunion Weekend, Thomas Beatty (B.A.'93/H&S), principal at Richmond Community High School, will bring 55 students to visit the VCU campus as a part of the VCU PROMISE PROGRAM. The AAAC and the VCU Alumni Association will sponsor a variety activities for the students. 2 p.m.–3 p.m. - River District Canal Cruise - In 1795, the towpath canal system was built in Richmond so that boat traffic could bypass the rapids. Enjoy a one-hour guided canal tour as you take in a one-of-a-kind view of Virginia’s capital city and learn how the canals helped in the development of Shockoe Bottom. Parking is available in the Omni Richmond Hotel garage, just a short distance from the Turning Basin (fees apply).

2:45-5 p.m. - Richmond Landmarks Segway Tours - Leaving from the lobby of the Omni Hotel, a 15-minute orientation to make sure you’re safe and comfortable gliding around town will begin at 2:45 pm. On this guided tour, you’ll see all of Richmond’s top landmarks including The John Marshall House, The Wickham House, Valentine Richmond History Center, St. Paul’s Church, James River Flood Wall, Brown’s Island, The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar and more. THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

4:30 p.m. - Richard T. Robertson Alumni House 10-Year Anniversary Celebration - Visit the Robertson Alumni House and meet those who were instrumental in the purchase and planning of VCU’s first alumni house. Keynote address by Richard T. Robertson (B.S.'67/MC) at 5 p.m. Afterward, stroll across the street to the Scott House for the Welcome Reception (charge).

10 p.m.–2 a.m. – AAAC Alumni Bowling Party – The AAAC is hosting its alumni bowling event at AMF Sunset Lanes on West Broad Street. This event will provide an opportunity for our alumni to network while boasting an environment of friendly competition! There will be a cash bar, music and "extreme bowling" for your enjoyment. Cost includes unlimited bowling and shoe.

8 a.m. - Cycling Event - Alumni and friends are invited to a morning bicycle ride. Start the morning with a meet and greet with the VCU Cycling team from 8-9 a.m. in the Student Commons. The ride then begins at the Student Commons and goes east on Osborne Turnpike (Route 5) to the Osborne Boat Landing. The ride is about 22 miles round trip with a few hills and some traffic. An extended route will be offered for those who would like to ride a little more than 22 miles. Cue sheets will be provided for all riders. More information.
9-11 a.m. - AAAC Alumni Basketball – Come for a morning of fun and recreation at the recently renovated Cary Street Gym where a basketball court has been reserved exclusively for alumni. Just identify yourself as VCU alumni at the entrance.

9 a.m. - Resume Writing and Behavioral Interviewing - Although you may think you know how to write a resume, this session will cover resume writing for today’s job market. Additionally, updated information on interviewing skills will be covered and you will learn how to prepare for the behavioral interview. This session will be conducted by faculty from the VCU University Career Center.

10 a.m. - CareerBeam demonstration - Join us for an overview of CareerBeam, a new program offered to assist alumni with their career exploration. This session will provide a step-by-step guide in using the various personal assessment tools and business and job databases available to alumni through this virtual career center.

11 a.m. - 1 p.m. - AAAC Reunion Symposium w/J.B. Bryan - "Mainstream Millionaire" - In this era of financial uncertainty, the idea of becoming a millionaire may seem to be an unobtainable goal to some. Managing your assets and maximizing your financial potential, however, could be more important now than ever before, especially in the African-American community.
VCU alumna Jennifer “J.B.” Bryan (M.S.'92/MC), founder of J.B. Bryan Financial Group Inc., facilitates an interactive symposium, "Mainstream Millionaire," to help our alumni explore the possibilities that exist for all of us to achieve financial prosperity and long-term security for our family.
Bryan has been featured on numerous national outlets, including the Lifetime Television show “New Attitude,” XM Satellite Radio’s "The Joe Madison Show" as a weekly financial information contributor, Bankrate.com and Black Enterprise magazine. Bryan also is a former AAAC "Outstanding Alumni" honoree and the 2004 American Business Women's Association Business Person of the Year.

AAAC Park Outing
1:30 p.m. - Alpha II Omega Flag Football Tournament – Organized by the Theta Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the Phi Delta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., this flag football tournament is open to all alumni and anyone interested in forming a team and participating in the tournament should contact Larry Powell (B.S.'85/H&S), assistant director of the VCU Alumni Association, at (804) 828-2586.

2:30-5:30 p.m. AAAC Alumni Cookout – Alumni, bring your family to Crump Park for an afternoon of outdoor fun. The park provides tables and benches under the shelters, several grills for outdoor cooking (available on a first-come, first-served basis), a playground area. You are invited to bring your own prepared food or items to cook on the grill (you must bring your own charcoal and grilling supplies) or enjoy food supplied by the AAAC. Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.

Directions: To get to Crump Park from downtown, take I-64 West to Exit 185 (Staples Mill Road/US-33 West). Follow Staples Mill Road for about five miles, make a right turn on Courtney Road and drive about one mile, make a right and an immediate left into Crump Park. In the event of inclement weather, please check the AAAC Web site for information on the status of the event.
9 p.m.-2 a.m. – AAAC Reunion Weekend Dance – AAAC and the Eta Tau chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. and the Delta Upsilon chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will co-host this year’s annual reunion weekend dance to celebrate their 40th anniversary on VCU’s campus. Alumni will enjoy music by DJ Rayvon of Power 92. The event will feature heavy d’oeuvres, music for all ages and a cash bar. Semi-formal attire.

10 a.m.–noon – AAAC "Until We Meet Again" Fellowship Breakfast - A perfect way to end an enjoyable weekend and remember classmates who are no longer with us. This event will include music, inspirational remarks, a buffet breakfast and remarks from our keynote speaker, VCU alumnus Pastor William Mickens. Limited space is available for this event. RSVP early to ensure that we will be able to accommodate you and be sure to check the Web site for any updates regarding the breakfast.
