Theatre VCU gears up for final performances of 'Ain't Misbehavin''

"Ain't Misbehavin'," opened at VCU's Raymond Hodges Theatre last week to a standing ovation.

Just listen to what the Commonwealth Times said,
"The five principle vocalists... were all outstanding. They sold you in their performances of Fats Waller's songs. You felt their sorrow in 'Black and Blue' and their cheer in 'Handful of Keys' ... The lighting and set design were amazing."

'Ain’t Misbehavin’' is a crowd-pleasing, good-times-rollin’ winner. The show is a no-holds barred, nonstop entertainment, neo-vaudevillian romp through the tunes of Fats Waller... each song tells a story and assumes a scene. Patti D’Beck directs a versatile cast who strut, sing and swing the songs Fats made famous - "Honeysuckle Rose," "This Joint is Jumpin’,"  the wicked "Ain’t Misbehavin’"  and many more!

Watch the cast on last week's Channel 6 Good Morning Richmond show!

The last two shows times and dates are: 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and 3 p.m. Nov. 22.

Tickets are $25 seniors, $20 VCU faculty and staff, $10 VCU students with valid ID, $15 other students with valid ID, $20 for groups of 20 or more. H&S scholarship reception brings together students and donors

Misha Adams (left), winner of the George B. Creasy Scholarship winner, greets Cindy Creasy Woolfolk (B.S.'87/MC), who created the scholarship in the School of Mass Communications. See more pictures from the event.

On Oct. 29, more than 90 students, donors and VCU faculty and staff gathered in the Richmond Salon of the VCU Commons for the College of Humanities and Sciences to thank the scholarship donors and to recognize the 2009 student recipients.

Fred Hawkridge, interim dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences, welcomed the guests.

"Now more than ever, scholarships from private sources, such as gifts from alumni and friends, help to meet the ever increasing financial need of our students,” Hawkridge said. “These are critical and uncertain economic times, and without scholarships, many of our students would not be able to achieve their educational dreams.  We are grateful and honored to have these named and endowed funds."

More than 100 scholarships are awarded through the College of Humanities and Sciences annually, providing more than $100,000 in support to students in the three schools and 15 departments and programs within the college.

“I think it’s wonderful the way the college hosts this event, bringing the recipients and donors together for a chance to meet and to learn more about each other,” said alumna and donor Cindy Creasy Woolfolk (B.S.'87/MC).  In 1999, Woolfolk established the Gene B. Creasy Scholarship to honor her father. It provides an annual scholarship of $1,000 for a rising junior or senior broadcast major from Virginia.

The afternoon program featured several of the college's recipients who shared brief remarks and expressions of gratitude: Leah Baldwin, recipient of the Jeffrey S. Cribbs, Sr. Endowed Scholarship in Philanthropy; Daniel Goodman and Daniel Grant, recipients of the Phillips and Weatherford Scholarships for Veterans; and Ausim Chaghtai, recipient of the Miles F. Johnson Award in Biology.

Chaghtai concluded with his comments that through scholarships students become more motivated and prepared to succeed and, without such financial assistance, for him, a VCU education would not be possible.

VCU experts talk business

Business Talks Business, the new speakers’ series presented by the VCU School of Business reached its goal of providing educational programs on timely issues to Richmond’s business community with George E. Hoffer’s October programs. Even as national headlines reported the latest turmoil in the automobile industry, Hoffer, professor of economics and nationally known expert in the automotive industry, delivered programs on current trends in the automotive industry.

Hoffer confirmed a slow recovery for the industry by citing many facts such as the decline of commercial real estate construction causing a weakened demand for light work trucks. In addition, new product market confusion will cause consumers to postpone purchases of green car technologies such as the gas-electric Chevrolet Volt and dual-system hybrids such as the Toyota Prius.

Hoffer also highlighted the risk of terminated new car dealerships attempting to become used car dealerships.  “In the short run, this concept will create turbulence in retailing used cars by creating CarMax clones,” he said. “An increase in used car retailing will not increase the supply or the final retail demand.”

The light at the end of the tunnel is a new and fresh car that automotive makers build by taking off-the-shelf parts and charging the final product at a premium in hopes of saving the industry, he said.

Members of Richmond’s business community, including representatives of the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association, gathered for three consecutive programs presented at three locations. Sponsors included Harris, Hardy, & Johnstone, P.C., Markel Corporation, the VCU Business Society and the Vanguard Charitable Endowment (Doughboy Fund).

At the November programs, Cynthia Schmidt, director of University Marketing at VCU, and Tammy Berwanger (B.S.'95/MC), project manager for University Marketing at VCU, explained the intricacies of social media marketing.

They talked about the best practices in social media marketing and provided case studies from VCU’s own efforts at three separate events in the Richmond area.

The next scheduled events in the series will be held Jan. 27-29 and will focus on sustainability and the economics going green with speaker Karl Bren, founder of GreenVisions Consulting
